The Compact will:
- Strengthen the relationship between the public and voluntary sector;
- Extend opportunities for the voluntary sector’s members, supporters and users to contribute their experience and ideas to the development and implementation of public policy;
- Provide better understanding of the size, needs and diversity of the voluntary sector to enable its continued development and sustainability;
- Make the policies and practice developed by the public sector partners, more responsive to the potential and needs of the voluntary sector;
- Enable voluntary organisations to communicate the needs of their users and wider constituencies more effectively to the public sector;
- Extend the opportunities to mobilise each sector behind programmes when these coincide with the objectives of both;
- Generate evidence and information on the value and impact of the work of the public sector and of the voluntary sector;
- Increase mutual understanding of how each sector works;
- Inform longer-term planning and strategic thinking.
Joint Commitments
All partners endorsing the Compact will:
- Promote partnership working between the public and voluntary sectors as a means of improving the lives of people and communities in South Lanarkshire;
- Contribute resources, ideas, specialist knowledge and innovation to the principle of partnership working between the sectors;
- Tackle inequality, prejudice, and discrimination to meet the needs of South Lanarkshire’s most disadvantaged communities;
- Develop and maintain positive dialogue around issues of mutual interest, adhering to the National Standards for Community Engagement;
- Contribute to increased information on the level and nature of activity taking place across the South Lanarkshire voluntary sector;
- Acknowledge the differences between rural and urban circumstances including issues such as accessibility and resources;
- Support and develop the particular role of volunteering in voluntary and community organisations and in the public sector.
